Surrounding Area

The Neighborhood

The three houses – my own house and the two cottages – are located on a mountain in Trier – at the end of a listed settlement called “auf der Domäne”, originally built in 1908 for the working families of the “Avelsbach vineyard domain” located in the valley. There is no bus stop, church, shop or restaurant here. The neighbours in this settlement are very friendly. There are very few cars, because the Baltzstraße is a dead end apart from a dirt road. Therefore, children can even play on the street.

The altitude

The city of Trier is 144 m above sea level and the estate “Lichtberg” is 294 m above sea level, which is 150 m higher than the city in the Moselle valley. These 150 meters of altitude must be walked or driven up and down when visiting the city.

The climate on the mountain is noticeably different: in a beautiful way fresher, clearer and airier and much less humid than in the valley. The air is clean. The sunshine in summer is very intense; therefore there is a parasol for every cottage, and the old maple tree at the top of the meadow provides wonderful shade. There is always a pleasant breeze under it.

Hiking and cycling paths

I recommend many wonderful hiking trails to my guests, some of which start directly at my estate. Saar-Hunsruck-Steig, the Moselsteig and the Eifelsteig are farmous. Guests can also start very interesting bicycle tours from here, which lead through wonderful landscapes – mountains and valleys and along the rivers. I provide my guests with good maps for hiking and cycling tours.

Small, easy trails from the house: if you follow the serpentine road from Lichtberg down into the valley, you will reach the Avelsbach estate, the wine-growing domain that was built in 1901 as a state model farm. From here you can walk along a wonderful level valley path along the renatured Avelsbach. There and back: 3.5 km – difficulty level: easy.

A few steps from my property … and you are surrounded by meadows and fields. I like to keep on walking up the mountain and from there I hike small, medium and large circular trails.
And this is one of my favourite hikes, which starts directly from the house (difficulty level: moderate):
Traumschleife Trier Galgenkopftour – (dream loop gallows head tour of Trier)
Distance: 17.0 km Time: about 3.5 hours

www.saar-hunsrueck-steig.de/traumschleifen/trierer-galgenkopftour

There are a lot of similar trails here.
From here it takes half an hour by car to reach the beginning of the premium hiking trail “Römerpfad”, which I can warmly recommend: www.roemerpfad.de, length 10 km, approx. 3.5 hours, moderate difficulty. – at the Moselsteig stage 04 Konz – Trier, length 21 km, duration: 6 hours, degree of difficulty: moderate (start and finish also reachable by bus and train): www.moselsteig.de

Shopping

It takes 6 minutes by car to get to the shopping center on the Petrisberg. There you can do some good shopping in the “WASGAU fresh market” (bread and baked goods even on Sunday mornings), Robert-Schuman-Allee 16; next to it is a “DM drugstore”, next to it a Sparkasse branch and opposite a “LIDL market”, Robert-Schuman-Allee 31.

In 10 minutes you can get to EDEKA, ALDI and some other shops: Kohlenstraße 60 – 62.

These two high-altitude shopping centers are also easy to reach on foot from the cottage.

In the center of Trier there are several good organic shops, one of which can also be reached directly by car: www.biomarkt-ulrich.de.

Restaurants

From the cottage you can walk through the fields to the next village in 20 minutes: Tarforst. There are 2 good restaurants; all guests praise both:

Vegetarians will also be happy in both restaurants.
